1. What’s the thinking behind the name AJ? The story of AJ really began during a rainy Tuk ride from the packaging supplier. The visit to the supplier was the last item on the "To do" list and we were faced with the classic dilemma of naming our business. We really couldn’t waste any more time and wanted to start this new venture so we went ahead and named it "AJ" which is obviously the most clichéd way of naming a company; an acronym of the owners!!! Bearing in mind the controversy it would stir we still stuck by the name as it had no preconceived impression in a customer's mind. Thus, the name "AJ" provided a blank canvas for us to paint the story of this new venture and it’s portfolios.
2. How long have you been around, and what made you start this? We’ve been around for 4 years! We have both been inspired by the adrenaline of entrepreneurial businesses, the fashion industry and philanthropy. And we both have varied skill sets so we thought it would be best for us to collaborate and create Sri Lanka's first accessory store. It was initially supposed to be a clothing store but 4 years back there was no proper place for women to buy accessories especially pieces that were unconventional like Body Chains to Temporary Tattoos. And about seven months ago we launched the Men’s Accessories range as well catering to Lapel Pins, Tie Clips, Bow Ties, Pocket Squares, Skinny and Regular Ties.
3. What are the items, you have featured on me today? We really wanted to match your personality and reflect your personal style so we chose these pieces for you; Personality tie clips: Retro Sunnies Tie Clip and Gold Anchor Tie Clip Lapel Pins: Flower Lapel Pin, Rose Lapel Pin and Gold Feather Lapel Pin Skinny ties: Floral Tie, Double Striped Tie and a Dolphin Detail Tie Bow tie: Solid Wine Red Textured Bow Tie, Black & White Bow Tie and Floral Bow Tie Pocket Square: Polka Dotted Pocket Square and Solid Classic Black Pocket Square, We paired them up to create a statement for each one of your outfits.
4. What are the special accessories you have for the ladies? For women we have a whole range of Body Jewellery, Temporary Tattoos, Earrings, Rings, Necklaces, Sunglasses, Watches and Bracelets.
5. Who would you say is your biggest clientele, Men or Women? We would definitely say women but the men aren’t far behind either!
6. Can you also customize designs on request? We don’t customize the accessories per se but we have brought down special pieces in bulk for customers like bow ties for the groomsmen or head chains for a group of dancers.
7. What are the show– stoppers you have for the season? For the men’s range we will be introducing Cufflinks and we have an entire new collection for each category under the men’s section and for women we have statement pieces from each category to compliment all your looks for the festive season.
8. What makes your ties different? What has been the reception for bold prints? Our ties are stand out pieces, off a curated collection and are meant to match different personalities. We are also obsessed about quality and want these pieces to last in your wardrobe. A lot of our customers really like the bold prints and we keep adding more to our collection!
9. What would be the men’s best seller? Bow ties! We see a lot of men converting from ties to paisley and floral detailed bow ties! 10. What's next for the brand? We are hoping to increase our range and really deliver what our customers want. In the future we are hoping to launch a brand new category so you will have to keep tabs on us!
