Buzz!!!! With Danu - MARIO M. STUBBS

Nov 15, 2017

Today I have a fashionista , who is forever traveling MARIO M. STUBBS WHO IS THE FOUNDER/ CONSULTANT AT GENESIS GLOBAL CONSULTING. Genesis Global Consulting focuses on Consulting in Hospitality. Apart from this busy life, he lives it up with many things and I have been more impressive with the projects which his parents have been championing for years now, all this and more on the buzz today

Full Name – Mario Malcolm Stubbs
Hometown- Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka
Status- Single
Birthday-  2 June 1984
Passions- Travel/Dining, Sport, Fitness, Social Work
Favorite Colors -  White/Black/Red

Describe what it is that you do? And about all the projects you and your family are involved in?

I am currently a Management Consultant running my own business focused on the hospitality industry. I look into all areas of the hotels operations and ensure they strive to be more profitable, are well positioned and have long term plans in place for their business. I work/ focus on key emerging markets such as Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, etc.

I balance the above/ frequent travel with supporting my parents and their projects which have been established and well recognized for the last 30 years in Sri Lanka. My parents work with disabled children, young adults and displaced/less fortunate children and families. They have evolved through the years and have diversified and expanded their work in the central and eastern provinces of Sri Lanka.

How would describe your passion for traveling and promoting Sri Lanka?

Travel is definitely at the top of the list in terms of passions. I love jumping on a plane, traveling to new destinations, discovering new places and cultures, trying new cuisine, meeting people during my many adventures and sharing these experiences with fellow travelers.

When it comes to promoting Sri Lanka, its really is a no brainer. Sri Lanka is truly paradise. It’s a jewel in the Indian Ocean with everything and anything packed into a tiny island. The terrain, landscape, food and most importantly the people and their hospitality which have drawn many tourists to seek permanent residency

Who has been your biggest support in making this a reality?

God, my parents and sister and all the people I have met and learnt from throughout the years in various industries who have always pushed me to start my own business and do my own thing. And what really helped me was my most recent job as Area Manager at Expedia which defined and was the turning point in my life to realizing what my niche is and the career path I want to specialize in and stick to. It was a dream job and great company with many learnings.

Tell me your style of work?

I believe in being productive and not just clocking in time at an office to draw a pay check each month. I am very precise and somewhat a perfectionist when it comes to work. I take a planned approach to any project I work on and ensure it is completed with the least amount of flaws. And what I enjoy most is people management, be it internal or external stakeholders.

What would you say, is the biggest challenge people face in workspaces?

Working as a team and learning that everyone is not the same. Work places can be the most challenging, competitive and also the most cut throat. Putting your peers ahead of your own personal intentions or wanting to grow and really pushing for their success while achieving your own personal goals defines a leader from a manager.

What are some of your most defining moments in life?

• The day my sister was born

• achieving my career goal of being a CEO/Country manager of a multinational before hitting 35

• Celebrating the successes of milestones in my parents Social Work – e.g. My father receiving an MBE from HRH the Prince of Wales for his work in Sri Lanka, the visit of HRH the Prince of Wales to our humble home in the hills and the project, and the completion of 30 years of setting up their NGO

What does a “day of work” look like:

Wake up, run, plan for the day, prioritize, complete meetings (mostly virtual calls), explore opportunities of expansion, take many breaks in-between ? and finish up with a great work out in the gym.

How involved in fitness are you?

Very. I run every morning, gym every evening, kick box, play squash and golf.

Tell me about your family?

My parents are the most loving couple I have come across and have a well balanced lifestyle with a lot of patience to put up with two very difficult to manage children. They are very supportive of decisions and have always been the pillars and driving force behind our success and the success of those who have worked with them. They started with nothing and have come so far in life and have impacted the lives of so many others in so many ways. I can only dream to be even 1/100th of what they are. My sister is a nurse in the UK and is currently studying for her Masters and PhD in Psychology and is definitely the smarter one in the family.

Would you rather…

Eat broccoli or carrots? Broccoli

Watch TV or listen to music? Music

Own a lizard or a snake? Neither – hate reptiles

Have a beach holiday or a mountain holiday? Mountain

Be an apple or a banana? Apple

Be invisible or be able to read minds? Read minds

Be hairy all over or completely bald? Hairy

In the Spot?

What are your thoughts on Yahapalanaya? Same shit, different day ? All politicians in my opinion are the same but having said that I would like to be optimistic about Yahapalanaya and their approach- wishful thinking. In theory and on paper, their policies are quite diplomatic and support the people and development of the country. Freedom of speech and ability to express oneself is better than previous regimes.  Optimism!

What are your thoughts on PRIDE week in Sri Lanka? Great to see Sri Lanka supporting diversity and inclusion and keeping in line with the constantly changing world and its mutual respect to individual preferences. I definitely support this initiative.

If you have to face another fuel shortage, what would you do? Buy a bicycle

Ask GOD to change one problem in the world today, what would you like him to change? End ethnic discrimination/bias and poverty

Be an Olympic athlete, what sport would you compete in? 100 meter sprint

Be in the movie of your choice, what movie would you choose and what character would you play? I am not too great at acting and have stage fright ? But if I really had to, I would like to play James Bond in any of the Bond sequels

Be someone else, who would you be? My mum or my dad! Hands down, no doubt!
